An archive of the personal papers of Richard Haughton James commercial artist, industrial designer, advertising executive and painter.

Richard Haughton James was a commercial artist, industrial designer, advertising executive and painter. This archive is composed mainly of his personal papers. It includes personal correspondence from his family and friends, as well as his travel diaries. James was passionately committed to raising people's understanding of modern art, and he is credited with helping to develop a more enlightened attitude to modern art and industrial design in Australia. His work in this regard can be seen in the large series of articles, talks and broadcasts in this archive. There is also material from his work as the editor of the magazine 'Australian Artist'. The archive also contains a large number of photographs and material from James's painting career.
