Descriptions

Records of F T Wimble and Co Ltd, Australian manufacturers of printing ink and distributors of printing machinery, based in Sydney from 1803 to 1994.

F.T. Wimble & Co was the manufacturer of the first printing ink produced in the southern hemisphere (Melbourne, 1868). In addition to printing ink manufacture, type founding and electrotyping, Wimble's were the Australian representatives of many overseas manufacturers of printing machinery and accessories. Frederick Thomas Wimble (1846-1936) emigrated to Australia in 1867. His family had been pioneers in the making of printing ink since 1768 and he began his business in Melbourne by importing inks to sell. Soon, however, he imported a printing ink plant and produced the first printing ink made in Australia. He transferred the head office to Sydney in 1877 and by the 1880s Wimble's was supplying all types of printers' needs. The archive includes company business records such as financial records, minute books, annual reports, and administrative papers. There are also catalogues, leaflets, photographs and newsletters.
