Descriptions

A collection of over a hundred pairs of stockings put together between 1978 and 1985 by costume enthusiast Mrs Naona Beecher-Moore.

Mrs Naona Beecher-Moore was interested in building up a collection that demonstrated the social and textile history of the development of stockings. She recognised the fact that stockings were not being collected or appreciated, particularly those of the 20th century. Stockings in the collection date from the early 1800s. Predominately they are from Great Britain, Europe and the United States. Highlights include a pair of silk stockings made for Queen Victoria, early artificial silk stockings, a pair of woollen stockings worn for sea bathing, and a pair patterned with the faces of the four Beatles.
