Descriptions

A collection of objects from Speedo, the swimwear design company started in Sydney in1929. The collection includes swimwear, accessories, designs, and catalogues dating from the 1930s to the present.

Speedo is the world's principal competitive swimwear designer and manufacturer. This extensive collection of Speedo swimwear and accessories dates from the 1930s to the present, and includes designs produced for the Australian Olympic team from 1964 to 2000 and the Australian Commonwealth Games team from 1970 to 1994, as well as designs produced for several international teams in the 1960s. This is complemented by the Speedo archive, which includes Speedo catalogues, posters, photographs, newsletters, price lists, stickers and badges. Speedo began manufacturing swimwear in Sydney, Australia in 1929. While it also designed and manufactured leisure swimwear and for a time men's and women's knitted leisure wear, it was best known for its competitive swimwear. Its aim was always to improve swimmers' speed, and the collection illustrates the design and technological innovations that mark the evolution of competitive swimwear
