Herb Gilbert collection
The Herb Gilbert collection consists of a Metropolitan Rugby Union "B" cap for 1909 and a 1910 commemorative cap belonging to the rugby union and league player Herb Gilbert (Snr).
Herb Gilbert began his football career playing rugby union. He displayed early talent and represented Australia in the Wallabies team of 1910. The following season he switched to rugby league during a time when many Union players were defecting to the professional code. As a League player Gilbert enjoyed a long career including representing New South Wales and playing for the Kangaroos in two international tours. He is remembered as a strong player in both rugby codes and among Australian rugby's pioneer players.
