Descriptions

The AC Bannerman collection consists of a silver-plate tankard presented to Australian cricketer Alexander Chalmers (Alick) Bannerman by Mr (later Sir) Frederick Thomas Sargood on the occasion of the Australian cricket team's 1880 tour of England.

AC Bannerman was a public servant by profession and an avid and successful amateur cricketer. A cautious, 'stonewalling' batsman and a highly regarded fielder, Bannerman was a member of the Australian team from 1878 until 1893. The 1880 Australian tour of England, from when this tankard dates, is notable in that it included the first Test match played on English soil.
