A collection of drawings and journals by the aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave, dated between 1865 and 1915.
The Powerhouse Museum holds a large collection of material relating to the aviation pioneer Lawrence Hargrave. Hargrave's greatest contribution to aeronautics was the invention of the box or cellular kite. He also had a number of other areas of research and interest, such as his exploration work in the Torres Straits and New Guinea. These are all illustrated in this archival collection of his work. The archive includes drawings of engines, flying machines, kites and wave propelled vessels. Also included is correspondence, newscuttings and journals containing details of his aeronautical work, travels, interests and ideas. This archival collection is complemented by W. Hudson Shaw's Lawrence Hargrave Archive Collection and a collection of objects relating to Hargrave, both held by the Powerhouse. Together they form the most significant collection of Hargrave material assembled
