Descriptions
A collection of objects relating to and used at the Sydney Observatory from when the Observatory commenced in 1859 until the 1982. Objects include astronomical equipment, scientific instruments and furniture.
The first astronomer appointed to Sydney's new observatory in the 1850s was Reverend William Scott. He supervised the construction of the Observatory which was completed in 1859. The Sydney Observatory continued to operate until the 1982. As well as astronomical work, research by scientists and astronomers included surveying, time-keeping, meteorology, magnetic observations and tidal studies. In 1982 the management of the Observatory and its collection was transferred to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. The collection includes almost 300 objects that were used at the Observatory. These include astronomical instruments and equipment as well as scientific instruments and furniture. Many objects, such as telescopes and the time ball, are still located at the Observatory.
