The Geoff Bartram collection consists of a mountaineering outer suit worn during the First Australian Mt Everest Expedition in 1984.
The Geoff Bartram collection consists of a mountaineering outer suit worn during the First Australian Mt Everest Expedition in 1984. Mountaineering is one of the most extreme activities that humans can engage in. Mt Everest, at 8874 metres elevation, is the most famous of the world's mountains and is popularly regarded as the greatest climbing challenge. Geoff Bartram was a member of the First Australian Mt Everest Expedition which made its attempt on the mountain in 1984. Two members of the expedition, Tim Macartney-Snape and Greg Mortimer, succeeded in reaching the summit and became the first Australians to do so. Geoff Bartram reached 7400m but had to descend due to symptoms of cerebral oedema; however he later recovered and played a key role in the other climbers' safe return from the mountain.
The expedition was the first to climb Everest by the North Face 'Great Couloir' route, and made its climb without supplementary oxygen. All members of the expedition survived. The success of the expedition was significant for Australia and was notable in terms of world mountaineering.
