Descriptions
The National Museum of Australia has an extensive collection of artworks created by Indigenous artists in the Ernabella community. The collection comprises a range of media including fabric works, ceramics, wooden carvings and print works. The collection also contains historical artefacts such as a school exercise book, a hymnal, black and white photographs and other material documenting the history of the community and country.
Ernabella is located in Pukatja, 440 kilometres southest of Alice Springs, just below the Northern Territory border in South Australia. The collection of Ernabella artworks has been acquired over a number of years and includes objects acquired from the Aboriginal Arts Board, three Winifred Hilliard collections and eight Ernabella Arts collections.
Ernabella artists are renowned for their batik work and Ernabella Arts is one of Australia's longest continually running Aboriginal Arts organisations. The collection traces the development of Ernabella Arts from its beginnings as an organisation established to provide employment for women, working with locally produced wool, to its international renown for batiks and printmaking. The National Museum collection also documents less successful ventures, including copper beating and stone carving.
