Descriptions

This collection features a diverse range of art, craft and material culture from Timor-Leste and West Timor, Indonesia. A range of hand crafted terracotta ceramics, hand-woven textiles, wooden carved ancestral figurines and architectural elements such as doors and roof finials contribute to this collection.

A noteworthy aspect of this collection is a group carved wood figurines from Atauro island, Timor-Leste. Additions of hand crafted body adornment, finely incised betel-nut containers, woven fibre mats and baskets along with several wooden masks complement the diversity of this collection. Examples of limited edition prints featuring textile motifs of Amarasi, West Timor and contemporary artworks produced post-independence in Timor-Leste document emerging fine art practices. A collection of ephemera donated by Australian Army servicemen upon completion of their tour in Timor-Leste post 2000 documents this period of Timor-Leste's history and its bi-lateral relationship with Australia.
