Morton Allport (1830-1878) was one of Tasmania's earliest photographers and his collection of around 180 photographs date from between 1855 and 1870. He was a member of the Amateur Photographic Association of Great Britain and was awarded several of its prizes. Most photographs are studies of his family and local scenery and are divided between stereo views and albumen prints.

Most photographs are studies of his family and local scenery and are divided between stereo views and albumen prints. The albumen prints include views of: Impression Bay Probation Station; Port Esperance; New Town Church Yard; Hobart from below the Huon Road; portraits of Mrs. Morton (Elizabeth) playing harp; Evett and Joseph Allport; Drawing Room, Government House; Laying the foundation stone of the City Waterworks, Hobart Town, 1861; the painter John Skinner Prout; and a self portrait. An album contains 43 prints of Tasmanian ferns and bush scenes as well as the making of the Hobart reservoir another has 35 prints, many by Felice Beato of scenes in India including: the Oudh Commission; Cawnpore Entrenchments; Capt. Ludlow Smith; Kaiserbagh Mosque and palace at Lucknow. Around half the images are stereo views, some of which, are the same or similar to the single prints and include: New Town Church Yard; St John's Cemetery; Bruny Island Lighthouse; family portraits; Hobart Wharves, Pipe Clay Lagoon, Queechy and many bush scenes. Another important group is the series of 24 stereo prints taken on Allport's excursion to Lake St. Clair in February 1863.

This collection contqains significant photographs by one of Australia's earliest photographers.It also contains photographs by the internationally renown photographer Felice Beato.
