Descriptions

Allora District and Historical Society collection consists of detailed twentieth-century histories of the buildings in the Allora Township. As a whole they are illustrative of both the changes in country trades in regional Australia and details relating to the transfer of ownership as a result of the First and Second World Wars.

The main significance of this collection lies in the detailed twentieth-century histories of the buildings in the Allora Township. Allora was surveyed in 1859, constituted a municipality on 21 June 1869 and connected by railway in 1912. As a whole they are illustrative of both the changes in country trades in regional Australia and details relating to the transfer of ownership as a result of the First and Second World Wars. The buildings include: the Allora Methodist Church; the Railway Hotel built in July 1902 built and designed by William Leggatt, and taken over by Arthur Cameron a Boer War veteran in 1914; a Pharmacy built by the Stay Brothers in the early 1900's; the Tru-Value Hardware store; Bowen Therapy; Newsagency; Veterinary Clinic; Post Office; Butcher's; Fire Station; the Holme's Brothers Store; the C. B. C. Bank closed in 1981; the "Blue Cow" hotel, also known as the "Royal Hotel" and the "Queens Arms" hotel; Burge's saddlery; the old School and Deacon & Co. Stock and Station Agents.

This collection illustrates the significant changes and reshaping that occurred in a country town in Regional Australia over the course of the twentieth century.
