The collection (206 items) comprises a double ended, partially decked fishing boat and rig; spare rigging and boat parts; leather stencil; clothing and underwear; cap; rowlocks, life jackets; flags, fishing nets, fishing line baskets, lead weights, fishing line and cord, corks, grapnels, anchors, net roller, lights, lagging, fastenings, seive, fish cleaners, bag hook, sail cloth, scales, paint tins, knives.
The focus of the Doria Collection is the work and lifestyle of the Molfettese (Italian) fisher who migrated to Fremantle in 1921 and commercially fished there until the 1980s. The collection provides insight into the techniques, attitudes and ideas introduced to WA fisheries by immigrants from Europe, and the issues they faced in accommodating to the WA physical and cultural environment.
