The gold mining history collection at the Western Australian Museum has been developed largely over the past forty years. It is comprised of: material relating to prospecting; material relating to underground mining, including large equipment (such as headframes and stamper batteries) used in the process of extracting and processing gold; assaying equipment; and health and safety equipment. The majority of the collection is held in Kalgoorlie at the WA Museum - Kalgoorlie, a Museum store in Boulder and the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame (APMHOF). Some material is held at the WA Museum's Collections and Research Centre at Welshpool.

Some material may be subject to copyright.

Much of the large technological material is exhibited at the APMHOF. Other material is exhibited at the Western Australian Museum - Kalgoorlie/Boulder. Acess to stored material by appointment - http://www.museum.wa.gov.au/about/contact-us

Much of the large technological equipment and related buildings were acquired in 1976 from the Hainault Tourist Mine, Kalgoorlie. This material remained on site at Hainault Tourist Mine, through a loan agreement, until the development of the Super Pit. In 1992 most of this collection was relocated to the Hannans North site, which later became the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame. It is currently on loan to the APMHOF.
