The Banner Collection, comprising 12 banners in total, represents the collective identity of a number of unions organised on the Western Australian Goldfields and in Perth and Fremantle, Western Australia. They cover the three major banner making periods in Western Australia - the late 19th to early 20th centuries, 1930s, and 1980s. The first banners are a microcosm of the early labour movement with imagery depicting detailed aspects of work, mottoes promoting the dignity and value of union member labour, the benefit of organised labour, and references to an inherited British labour tradition. Four banners from this period are from the Goldfields, which dominated the early labour movement in Western Australia. Three represent the labour movement in Perth and Fremantle. Two banners by artist Harald Vike represent the 1930s period and three banners were made in the 1980s banner revival period. Collectively the banners represent the internal cohesion of the labour movement as well as contradictions, changes and amalgamations of unions over time.
