Descriptions
The Margaret S Bain Collection consists objects made by Indigenous people from Ernabella, South Australia; Mornington Island, Queensland Gulf and Aurukun, Cape York, Queensland.
In 2004 Margaret Bain donated some 200 objects made by Indigenous people from Ernabella, South Australia; Mornington Island, Queensland Gulf and Aurukun, Cape York, Queensland. The works were made in the mid 1950s and 1960s and include decorated spears, woomeras, boomerangs, fire sticks, feather bundles, tools and small, carved animals.
Margaret Bain OBE, BSc, MA regularly worked alongside Aboriginal people in remote communities of Central Australia and Northern Queensland since 1956. She has written numerous publications on Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australian relations and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (Civil) on 31 December 1976 for Aboriginal welfare.
