Descriptions
The collection includes material from several McKilliam family members, but the majority of the collection relates to Captain Robert Basil Vincent McKilliam's working life as an apprentice, a mate, and then captain - much of which was with the Aberdeen White Star line.
This remarkable and vast collection of material is a rich and complete record of the career and personal life of a mariner from the 1870s to the 1930s. It consists of a diverse array of material, including uniforms, photographs, certificates, references and details of the accounts, contracts, personal references, certificates of discharge, wage documents and receipts. McKilliam's meticulous records contain a wealth of shipping information. One series of handwritten notebooks contains entries of statistical summaries of voyages 26 - 41 of SS DAMASCUS, voyages 13 - 14 of SS SOPHOLES and voyages 18 - 20 of SS SALAMIS, all detailing the number of passengers, weight of coal shipped, value of freight, steaming distance and time. Other documents include an unpublished manuscript, diaries with working notes appointments, abstracts logs, newspapers, handwritten morse codes, postcards, and ephemera such as a poem by Henry Lawson given to McKilliam upon his departure for England and a lock of McKilliam's hair. It also includes material from other McKilliam family members, most notably McKilliam's wife Laura. The material was donated by various descendants of Captain McKilliam.
