A collection of user generated stories about people with disabilities, told through the use of multimedia tools. Contributors have combined material from their own personal archives of audio visual material (photographs, video footage, text, music and sound) to produce a 3-4 minute personal story which they have then narrated. This collection contains approximately 50 titles and dates from 2001.
There is a high chance that you know one or more people with a disability but do not realise they have it. Not all disabilities are visible. People with disabilities are often stereotyped or identified by what they cannot do, not what they can do.

One of the strengths of ACMI's 16mm film collection is our comprehensive collection of classic Australian documentaries from the 1940s and 1950s produced by Federal and State government agencies. There are over 500 titles in this collection and they range from short to feature length.
One of the strengths of ACMI's 16mm collection is our comprehensive collection of classic Australian documentaries from the 1940s and 1950s produced by Federal and State government agencies such as the Commonwealth Film Unit, Australian National Film Board, State Film Centre and the Victorian Ministry of Education. Many of the films produced by these agencies reflected the approach of highly influential British documentary film producer, John Grierson, who visited Australia in 1940 to advise the Commonwealth Government on the establishment of a national film board to produce documentary films in the national interest. Documentary makers such as John Heyer (Back of Beyond) and Gil Brearly (Sunday in Melbourne), R. Maslyn Williams (Mike and Stefani) and Cecil Holmes (Three in One) were also heavily influenced by the European art cinema which screened at the film societies that thrived in Melbourne during this period. ACMI holds many of the titles made by these and other filmmakers in this documentary tradition which are an integral part of the development of film culture in Melbourne and Australia. In some cases however only one or two prints are held of these significant titles and only on 16mm. There is an increasingly pressing need to undertake digitisation of these prints to ensure their accessibility in the future.

ACMI acquire one of Australia's most significant private collections of television and pop culture memorabilia in 2006. The Bob Phillips Collection, assembled by veteran TV Producer Bob Phillips, with the cooperation of Australia's major television networks, features technical equipment from Australian television's very beginnings, including a camera used to shoot the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, together with memorabilia from some of Australia's most iconic television personalities and programs.
Bob Phillips started collecting television memorabilia when he began his TV career at Melbourne's GTV9 as a film editor in 1959. He moved to live television, first as a production assistant, then working his way up to floor manager for Graham Kennedy's In Melbourne Tonight. He continued to build the collection over the next 20 years, as well as going on to produce many Australian favourites such as The Graham Kennedy Show, The Mike Walsh Show, Hey Hey It's Saturday and a number of other Nine productions. After leaving the industry, Mr Phillips opened TV World, a museum dedicated to the preservation of Australia's TV history. His collection was acquired by ACMI in 2006

A collection of user generated stories and first person accounts of what it was like to represent Australia during the various wars Australia participated in during the 20th century, told through the use of multimedia tools. Contributors have combined material from their own personal archives of audio visual material (photographs, video footage, text, music and sound) to produce a 3-4 minute personal story which they have then narrated. Around 80 short films have been created since 1993 as part of the Digital Storytelling program at ACMI.
Australia has been involved in a number of conflicts since Federation. Australia's national identity has been strongly influenced by both this involvement and the international relationships that these conflicts have generated. The wars in which Australia has been involved have also shaped some dramatic social changes over the last century. These stories provide some personal reflections on and insights into the experience of war and the attitudes of Australians to those conflicts.

A collection of personal and community stories told through the use of multimedia tools. Contributors have combined material from their own personal archives of audio visual material (photographs, video footage, text, music and sound) to produce a 3-4 minute personal story which they have then narrated. There are currently around 1200 titles in the collection, however this number will increase by around 50-100 a year as Digital Storytelling has continued to be a popular program at ACMI since it started in 2003.
A hundred years after cinema began the means of telling stories through moving pictures and sound is within reach of the next generation as an everyday language. Relatively recently we have seen the growth of the independent and the personal storytelling achievements of individuals. This growth of individual 'moviemaking' about personal memories and community stories is at the heart of this growing collection of Victorian stories. This collection inspires increased social and educational development through an understanding of individuals and their stories that go to make up Victoria's diverse communities. ACMI's systematised collecting of these new stories will provide a unique source of material for reflection and learning and builds the heritage collection of the future. Themes explored include: The Power of Stories; Community; Change and resilience; Belonging and identity; Ability and disability; Young Australians; Snapshots of Australian History; Conflict: Australians at War; Indigenous Australian Voices. Most of these stories are available on analog formats, ie, VHS and DVD and some are accessible online through ACMI's Generator website. This program started at ACMI in 2003.

Films that consider an existence different to present reality, whether loosely based on science or completely made-up, fantastic worlds.
743 titles constitute the Fantasy and Science Fiction Collection, accessible in VHS, DVD and Film. Both Science Fiction and Fantasy genres in film are characterised as being speculative; portraying an existence different to the current reality, usually given advances of a scientific or technological nature for science fiction or even a different world altogether, as is the case with Fantasy films. The genre also often explores the effect on the human condition within these fantastic or futuristic worlds.

A collection of iconic film noir titles, including post 1960s titles, laden with the influences of the genre made popular since the 1940s.
The development of this genre is mapped by the 836 titles in ACMI's Film Noir Collection. Influenced by German Expressionism, 'Film Noir' is mostly encapsulated by the American thrillers of the 1940s-1960s. This includes films released since that may have been heavily influenced by this evocative genre around the world, such as the more modern stylings by Australian filmmakers Bill Bennett and Alex Proyas.

This is a collection of film works, the range extending to VHS, DVD, 16mm and 35mm film, in languages other than English. These films were acquired to broaden the cultural focus of the Collection.
In the latter half of the 20th Century, ACMI's Collection, under its various organisational guises, was committed to acquiring films that were of filmic significance, whether or not they were produced in Australia or even in English. These works were drawn from the film festivals of the world, as film studies was increasing in popularity and legitimacy, and reflect some of the most exciting and creative narrative films as viewed on a world stage. They also add depth to the collection as a valuable film and cultural studies resource, as well as widening access to non-English speaking communities in Australia. The Collection holds over 2,500 titles of films, mostly produced between 1970 and 2007, by both established, respected directors and exciting up-and-coming filmmakers.

Straight from homes from Australia and overseas and preserved at ACMI, these home movies provide a snapshot of everyday life and a walk down memory lane. Over 50 works by all sorts of people, from budding film-makers to train enthusiasts, ranging from the 1920s to 1990s. Mostly digitised, these works were originally shot on 8mm, super 8mm and 16mm film stock, but available to view on video and DVD.
This collection has been unearthed from the homes and garages of Australia and overseas. ACMI holds the digitised content of works donated and accepted into ACMI's collection for their footage of Australian and Victorian life from the 1920s onward. Family life, work and play are all depicted in the footage, as well as events that have become embeded in the Australian collective consciousness. While most of the content has been digitised for preservation purposes, the footage was mostly originally shot on 16mm, 8mm and Super 8mm. This content has been mostly obtained through donations. Highlights include the Straford brothers works of the 1950s, Margaret Benson's footage of the construction of the Westgate Bridge in Melbourne's West and the home movies of train enthusiast Fred Daley.

A collection of horror stories on film throughout the 20th century, consisting of monsters, occult, killers or psychological thrillers.
ACMI's Horror Collection can be dated back to the work of Georges Melies and consists of 416 titles, available in VHS, DVD or Film. The 'Horror' film genre, whether based on supernatural elements, like monsters and the occult, or inspired by more realistic terrors, like serial killers and natural disasters, builds on society's fears. Explorations of the use of fear can be enlisted by the film-maker as a way of confronting prejudices or exploring mankind's darker nature. From the early beginnings of film, starting with 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari', to more contemporary titles, this collection can provide the ability to see into and expose everyday fears that permeate society.

A collection of user generated stories and first person accounts of Australian life and the historical landscape of Australia, told through the use of multimedia tools. Contributors have combined material from their own personal archives of audio visual material (photographs, video footage, text, music and sound) to produce a 3-4 minute personal story which they have then narrated. This collection contains approximately 50 titles and dates from 2001.
These stories explore many themes and raise various issues related to aspects of Australian history. Themes often become clearer if you try to answer a specific question. It can be interesting to ask yourself a question from a personal perspective, such as: 'Where are my family and I placed in Australian history?' or 'How has my family witnessed change in Australia's history?'.

ACMI holds many significant Australian titles on 16mm that contributed to or arose from the growth of a vibrant film culture in Victoria from the mid 20th century. In many cases these titles are not commercially available, nor is there a likelihood they will be released on current moving image formats. One of the strengths of ACMI's 16mm collection is our comprehensive collection of classic Australian documentary from the 1940s and 1950s produced by Federal and State government agencies such as the Commonwealth Film Unit, Australian National Film Board, State Film Centre and the Victorian Ministry of Education. Many of the films produced by these agencies reflected the approach of highly influential British documentary film producer, John Grierson, who visited Australia in 1940 to advise the Commonwealth Government on the establishment of a national film board to produce documentary films in the national interest. ACMI holds many of the titles made by these and other filmmakers in this documentary tradition which are an integral part of the development of film culture in Melbourne and Australia.

A collection of personal and community stories, about participant's lives and that of those around them, told through the use of multimedia tools. Contributors have combined material from their own personal archives of audio visual material (photographs, video footage, text, music and sound) to produce a 3-4 minute personal story which they have then narrated. This collection contains approximately 50 titles and dates from 2001.
For millennia, people have gathered around the campfire to share stories. They have entertained, shaped our identities, helped us make sense of the world and reinforced our cultural values. The invention of written script and the technology of printing then enabled us to record stories. These are very personal stories compiled by the storyteller and retold in a new way through the moving image.

Victorian Department of Agriculture
Moving image material produced by the Victorian Department of Agriculture from the 1950s to the 1980s. Around 4000 prints on either 16mm or Video.
Containing over 4000 prints on 16mm film and video, this collection consists of moving image material produced by the Victorian Department of Agriculture from the 1950s to the 1980s. Comprising an extensive range of documentaries, educational and scientific films, and footage on rural life and the practice and technology of farming in Victoria, the collection is of high historical significance. It includes geographically and culturally important footage of regional Victoria and Melbourne. Subjects range from managing insect plagues and adverse weather to beekeeping, irrigation, the Royal Tour, the Melbourne Show, histories of farming practices and social comment. Many titles have high historical importance over and above their value as historical documents of agriculture in Victoria. From many perspectives, this is an important collection, not just because it records Victoria's agricultural heritage, but also because many of our filmmakers learnt their craft in making these films. There are treasures to be uncovered in the camera original footage.
